چکیده

Hydroxyl and other oxygen-containing radicals are known to be present during the degradation of organic water pollutants in illuminated TiO2 photocatalyst slurries. It is proposed that the hydroxyl radical, OH., is the primary oxidant in the photocatalytic system. Four possible mechanisms are suggested, all based on OH. attack of the organic reactant. The cases of reaction on the surface, in the fluid, and via a Rideal mechanism are shown to yield expressions similar to Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) rate forms. Compared with traditional L -H constants, the derived kinetic parameters represent fundamentally different reactions and properties. A rate parameter independent of organic reactant is predicted by the model and substantiated by experimental degradation data. On the basis of these model results, the kinetic parameters for the photocatalytic degradation may be estimated from data on the photocatalyst's physical properties, the knowledge of electron-hole recombination and trapping rates, and the values of second-order reaction rate constants for hydroxyl radicals. © 1990 Academic Press, Inc.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Toxins Secreted to Water by Cyanobacteria and Unicellular Algae and Photocatalytic Degradation of the Cells of Selected Microorganisms

Excessive algal growth in drinking water sources is responsible for toxin generation, and desinfection-by-product formation. In the photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants, titanium dioxide has been found to be highly efficient in the generation of hydroxyl radicals, which aree considered responsible for degradation of toxins and inactivation of water-borne microorganisms. The paper ...

Photochemical and photocatalytic degradation of trans-resveratrol.

Photochemical and photocatalytic degradation of the emerging pollutant trans-resveratrol has been studied under different irradiation wavelengths and using different TiO2 catalysts. trans-Resveratrol was more easily degraded when irradiated using the whole spectral range (UV-Vis) rather than with UV and near-UV to visible irradiation. The main intermediate of trans-resveratrol phototransformati...

Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE) from Aqueous Solution: A Review

Nowadays, underground water is the main source of drinking water that contamination to organic pollutants such as MTBE is an important issue. One of the suitable methods for these types of pollutants is the advanced oxidation methods. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are involved in the production of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals that oxidize organic matter such as MTBE and even le...

Ozone/graphene oxide catalytic oxidation: a novel method to degrade emerging organic contaminant N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET)

N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) is one of the important emerging contaminants that are being increasingly detected in reclaimed water as well as in drinking water sources. However, DEET is refractory to conventional biological treatment and pure ozone which is absent of hydroxyl radical. Current researches on the efficient removal of DEET are still quite limited. This study utilizes a novel met...

Aromatic Compound Degradation in Water Using a Combination of Sonolysis and Ozonolysis

The combination of sonolysis and ozonolysis as an advanced oxidation process was investigated to gain insight into factors affecting enhancement of the combined system. Sonolysis, ozonolysis, and a combination of the two were used to facilitate the degradation of three known organic contaminants, nitrobenzene (NB), 4-nitrophenol (4NP), and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), in water. Experiments were perfo...
